ABELAC

The Alianza de Bebidas Espirituosas de Latinoamérica y el Caribe - ABELAC aims to be a driving force for sustainability and responsibility in the distilled-spirits chain in the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

WHO WE ARE

The Alianza de Bebidas Espirituosas de Latinoamérica y el Caribe - ABELAC was born in June 2023 from the union of the global distilling producers Beam Suntory, Brown Forman, Diageo, Moët Hennessy and Pernod Ricard with the vision of enriching the discussion and promotion of activities focused on responsibility in the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the preservation and appreciation of the cultural, social, and economic aspects of distilled spirits, and to combat illicit trade of distilled spirits in the Latin American and the Caribbean region.

In addition to consolidating agendas of common interest to society as a whole, the creation of ABELAC enables a collaborative forum in the region, facilitating and strengthening of discussions about guidelines and public policies for the responsible consumption of alcoholic beverages and the implementation of initiatives and programs to reducing harmful drinking through commitments to our consumers, stakeholders and communities.

The entity was created to support regional and local trade associations by sharing information and resources and contribute also to the collection, standardization, and dissemination of data in Latin America and the Caribbean. Through the mutualization of information and resources combined with a broad vision of the entire region we will maximize local efforts and foster a collaborative environment which will contribute to the exchange of best practices among countries and their representatives, always focusing on commitments to sustainability and responsibility.

COMMITMENTS

Consumer education is a fundamental pillar to reduce the harmful use of alcohol and ABELAC's first central commitment. It is necessary to inform with transparency our consumers and tackle myths around beliefs that there are some forms of alcoholic beverages safer than others by offering tools reduce the on evidence-based research and policy so that healthy adults who choose to drink can actually understand and practice moderation.

A critical aspect of the responsibility when drinking alcoholic beverages is by overthrowing myths and by introducing and understanding concepts such as the standard drink, which allow consumers to monitor how much alcohol is in each beverage consumed and follow their consumption, regardless of the type of drink (after all, a drink is a drink).
In Latin America and the Caribbean, distilled spirits are heritage of the countries, represent their culture, project their diplomacy and leverage their economy in the regional and global landscape. The typical traditional distilled beverages, whether or not recognized as Geographical Indications, are produced under a vast legal framework that standardizes and controls their characteristics.

The illicit trade of alcoholic beverages brings health risks to the consumer, causes loss of revenue to the governments, it is untaxed, circumvents restrictions around availability, is of inconsistent quality and in the majority of cases finances organized crime, bringing negative health, economic and social impacts to all countries.

Partnerships between government, the private sector and civil society in a whole-of-society approach is absolutely fundamental to curb and stop the illegal production and trade of alcoholic beverages.

ABELAC - Preserving tradition, promoting responsibility

ABELAC's objectives are to discuss and promote activities focused on responsibility and awareness in the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the preservation and valorization of the cultural, social, and economic aspects of spirits, and to fight the illicit trade that harms people exposed to it, local economies, and companies.

OUR INITIATIVES

ABELAC is born in synergy with two key initiatives already undertaken, the first one, the campaign “Derribando Mitos” (Overthrowing Myths), aimed at offering knowledge and tools constructed on evidence-based research and policy, so that healthy adult people who choose to drink can actually understand and practice moderation; and the second a movement for the safeguard and preservation of distilled spirits protected with geographical indications known as, “Originating Spirits”.

OVERTHROWING MYTHS (DERRIBANDO MITOS)

The standard drink is the unit of measurement that defines the amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) contained in a drink. This allows you to make a comparison between drinks and add up the total alcohol consumed when drinking different types of beverages.

The standard drink allows consumers to monitor how much alcohol is in each alcoholic beverage consumed, regardless of the type of beverage. Each country adopts an official standard drink based on cultural issues, manner of consumption, traditional beverages of the place, and characteristics of the population.

The truth is that alcohol is alcohol, and the true control lies in the dosage, not the type of beverage!

We invite people to consult reliable sources of information. To learn more about the standard drink, visit the channels of the Fundación de Investigaciones Sociales [Social Research Foundation], A.C. @FISAC, a non-profit civil association created in 1981 with the purpose of carrying out activities to prevent the harmful use of alcohol and promote healthy lifestyles. We suggest these illustrative videos, from @FISAC:

DO YOU KNOW THE DERRIBANDO MITOS CAMPAIGN?

This MYTH that there are “strong and mild” alcoholic beverages is one of the myths that the Derribando Mitos [Debunking Myths] campaign seeks to clarify about alcoholic beverages. And one of the tools illustrated in the Derribando Mitos campaign is the standard drink – standard measure – which allows consumers to monitor how much alcohol is in each alcoholic beverage consumed, regardless of the type of beverage.

Derribando Mitos is a social impact initiative that seeks to raise public awareness about responsibility for the consumption of alcoholic beverages. By introducing common myths and reporting the truth behind them, the campaign is an important tool to educate and touch consumers to reduce harmful consumption of alcohol.

Created in Peru, the campaign has already been implemented in 8 countries and impacted over 51 million people, through materials and creative pieces published on digital channels and advertisements published in newspapers. Derribando Mitos provides research-backed information and evidence-based policies so adults who choose to drink may truly understand and practice moderate drinking.

In 2023, Derribando Mitos won bronze at the Effie® Awards, in Peru, under the Positive Change Social Good category. Putting the values and ideals of Derribando Mitos at the center of the discussion again, now from the perspective of ABELAC, the campaign reaches Uruguay – collaboration with the Centro de Fabricantes de Licores del Uruguay [Center of Liquor Manufacturers of Uruguay] –, in amplification in Latin America and the Caribbean, and is soon to reach Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago.

ORIGINATING SPIRITS

The movement Originating Spirits was created by producers of distilled spirits protected with geographical indication with the aim to safeguard and preserve their tradition and heritage. In its first approach, this movement was formalized with the Manifesto on the Geographical Indications of Distilled Spirits and Typical and Traditional Latin American Drinks - Sources of Culture and Economic and Social Development -, signed by the Brazilian Cachaça Institute - IBRAC and by the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry - CNIT, from Mexico. The movement focuses on distillated beverages recognized and protected as Geographical Indications, heritage of the countries and whose quality, reputation, or other characteristics, such as their historical importance, are essentially attributed to their geographical origin.
